Looking to the future

A new look
Have you seen the improvements?  And we’re not just talking about our now-advert-free website ! We’ve been working hard outdoors this summer:  the clubhouse has been repainted, inside and out, and we’ve got a new carpet (kindly donated by Bodmin Flooring Centre), and Cardinham Parish Hall have kindly given us some chairs. The toilet area, too, has been refreshed, with leaks sorted, walls painted, vinyl flooring laid, and new lighting installed.  Meanwhile, lots of volunteers have helped clear the outside area, with hedges cut, fences repaired, grass mown, paths cleared –  a massive thanks to all involved!

Planning for a brighter future
But there’s lots more to be done, and we will be inviting everyone in (and near) the parish to join us in this exciting venture, as we seek to build a sporting venue fit for the future, that enables all of us, young and old, to enjoy a wider variety of sports and improve our physical and mental wellbeing.

We have a plan  –  firstly, to replace our very tired tennis court with a hard-wearing surface that can safely accommodate additional activities, such as netball, hockey, or even knock-about football.  Secondly, despite the recent refurbishment, the clubhouse is ageing, and we look forward to having a more accessible clubhouse to serve as a hub for more sports, where walking, cycling and running groups can gather, where activities  focusing on physical, mental and emotional health can be held, whether it’s Yoga or Pilates, or sports-themed children’s parties or whatever.  This will take time – and resources  – but with your support, we can make a difference.

We’ll be applying for grant assistance, but for this we will need your help to raise our own funds locally  – so please do join us in this endeavour.  Support our fundraising events, invest in our future  –  exciting times are coming, and we’d love you to join us on this journey, whether as a member (new or existing), or simply as a person who wants to make a difference.

Winter membership
One way to support the club is to take advantage of our discounted winter-memberships.  If you’re not a member, why not join now, and for just £8 for a junior (under 25s), £36 for an adult, £59 for a couple, or £67 for a family, you can enjoy free use of our facilities until our regular ‘year’ begins on 1st May 2026.  Full details here

And remember, if you’re not yet sure whether tennis is for you , or maybe you feel a bit rusty, why not pop round any fine Wednesday evening from 6pm with a pair of sensible shoes, and join us for a bit of tennis?  Or even pickleball?  We’ve got rackets and balls for both…

Children’s summer tennis 2025

It was wonderful to see children from the area coming to play pickleball, tennis and even french cricket this summer at the sessions held each Wednesday afternoon throughout August – thank you to the wonderful parents who helped make it a success, and to our own Trevor for getting this off the ground.

It was a great introduction for the youngsters to the world of tennis – let’s hope they keep it up!

Please take care, when submitting photos for this website, that you have the rights to the photo (i.e. they are actually yours, not just e.g. lifted from another website), and that you don’t foresee anyone featuring in a photo objecting to its publication.  Our intention is not to embarrass people!  Thus, also, if you are uncomfortable with any photo that has been posted and would like it removed, either because you find it objectionable in some way, or because it features you and/or your children, please let us know;  just identify it by stating the page where you found the photo, and with the ‘xxxx.jpg’ label or ID number you see when you hover over the thumbnail image, or a description.  Thanks!

20+ at free tennis afternoon

What an afternoon that was! It was 23rd April 2023. The weather wasn’t good. Would anyone turn up to our free open tennis afternoon? But the rain stopped a few minutes before 2pm, and it wasn’t long before we were moving cars out the way to allow space for everyone. A quick count-up, and at 2.30 there were already twenty people there.

From the very young to the very… well, to the not so young – it was an afternoon enjoyed by all. For some, it was their first time ever to pick up a racket; for others, it was their first time after many years. It was all very informal – the need for accurate serves was abolished, and a blind eye was turned to double bounces.

Everyone was made very welcome. Certainly an event to repeat…

Quiz Night

What a wonderful evening – the long-awaited quiz, postponed several times due to covid etc., finally took place on 25 March 2023 at Cardinham Parish Hall.

And the winners were….

The Vic Thomas Memorial Trophy being awarded to the winning team, the ‘Deviock Donkeys’

Thanks to everyone who came for the quiz; it was not only great fun, but also raised £210. This helps us keep our prices down for both membership and pay-and-play tennis. A big ‘thank you’ goes to Malcolm, who so eloquently posed the questions – not too difficult, not too easy – it was pitched just right! Thanks also go to Julia who kept score, to Lance who organised the pasties, to Trevor who managed all the financial side, to everyone who donated raffle prizes, and to all those who helped behind the scenes.

Looking forward to the next one!

Settling down, preparing for the quiz to start

Skittles tonight

The countdown begins – looking forward to skittles tonight, down in Bodmin SWEB, 7 for 7.30 start.  Licensed bar available.  See you there!

Spring is in the air…

(18 April 2019) Greetings to members and friends of Cardinham Sports Club.

Many of you may already be aware that, with Malcolm wishing to retire from his position as secretary, I was elected at the recent AGM to take up his role.

You may also know that we’ve got a brilliant line up of activities coming up this year –  see listing below – or get the latest anytime by checking the ‘events‘ page on our website.

With the weather warming up, it’s a good time to be thinking about renewing our memberships, and also to get our friends and neighbours to join too.  Let’s get our facilities used by more people!

It’s a great time for new people to join up –  anyone who joins now will get 13 months membership – from the start of April this year, to the end of April next year.  The membership rates remain unchanged –  where else can you play tennis year round, any time, and day, for as little as a pound a month?  There’s never been a better time to join.

We’d like to ask all members (both new and renewing) to complete the form –  there’s a cover page with lots of info (and feel free to post it up as a poster, or forward to friends);  then there’s the membership application/renewal form, slightly changed to include data protection etc., and you can also pay online through BACS (bank transfer);   there’s another page needed to be filled for under-18s;  and the final page is a standing order form (for those who wish to pay that way).  Whether you fill then print out, or print then fill in by hand, please sign and get the original documents to Malcolm, Mark or myself  (for most of us, this will be a single page to print/fill/send).

Hope it all makes sense – and yes, let’s get more members playing more games;  and more social members joining for our cycling, skittles and croquet!
